Little Free Libraries
Community Design + Build
As part of a community design course, a group of fourth-year architecture students studied literacy rates within the Baton Rouge community, particularly the Mid City neighborhood. The study showed lowed literacy rates within the neighborhood and difficult access across town to the main Baton Rouge library. Responding to the need to increase literacy rates and spaces to gather within Mid City, students designed modular little free libraries based on the idea of "leave a book, take a book."
The design includes a bookcase, protected from the elements, and an attached bench. The combination of the library and bench invites users to stop, relax, and read.
